Week 3: What is Index,Symbol and Icons

What is index?
From my understanding index is a sign where it gives the direct meaning and it can be easily understand the purpose of the sign and the object in its direct point of views. We can recognize the object easily without having different meaning on it as the object is already exist and don’t need any advance interpretation for the object.
Examples:

The meaning of the directional signpost above represents school
crossing watch for pedestrian ahead.
The sign
shows the changes of climate
What is Symbol?

Symbol is a sign that does not show the direct meaning of the object. To get exact meaning or description of the object that we saw, we should learn deeper through the association. It does not show the real meaning, logic or connection between it. Any words are considered as symbol.
For an examples,

The color of red represents danger sign
What is Icons?
An icon is a sign where it represents the object in reality.it can be in form of photograph, illustrative or diagrammatic. Icon can gives into different meaning of what we had seen, it influenced by the cultural conventions.it is the simplest since the pattern physically resembles of what it seems to be.
For an example,
If this brings to mind a kind of fruit, it is acting as an icon

  1. In my understanding, index kind of telling meaning in direct way and can understand easily. For an example, index normally we can found at road side, a signpost that showing no entry is sign that we cannot enter at that side,it call as an index.

A symbol is a thing that represent an information. For example, a person personal names is consider a symbols representing an individuals.

  2. The symbol, index, and icon triad remains a tool of analysis at the core of semiotics. The icon is the easiest because it is a pattern that
resembles what 'physical means'. For example, a picture of your face also can be as icon to you. Then words can be partly iconic too.
For index, which is any sign can give a direct meaning to us to understand it that we call as index. Then symbols, any ordinary word, as
'give,' 'bird,' 'marriage,' is an example of a symbol because words as symbol.

  3. Index is a sign where it directly points to the message or instruction. For an example, the 'exit' sign in a building or traffic signs on the roads are indices that give us instruction and information about certain thing. On the other hand, icon is a sign that resembles something such as photographs of people. It does not give instructions like index but it directly related to what it represent. Lastly, symbol is a sign that has no direct connection on what it represent. One should learn the meaning of the symbol to understand it. For an instance, anchor is the symbol of hope. One will only know this if they have learnt it through associations if not it does not represent anything to them.
